"I first heard some of the material on this album when Tniz - friend, fellow cat-lover, coworker - played at a show I organized, part of a series I used to do highlighting collaborations, improv and works-in-progress. Tniz set up her gear (a guitar, small amp, pedals, and a four track and tape loops) right on the floor of a pretty big onetime warehouse, now (?) performance space in a neighborhood northwest of DTLA. What struck me in her performance, as she sat cross-legged and segued from the short, terrarium-like (tiny but ecologically dense) loops to her guitar pieces, was how she was able to draw us into her world, the world of the creation of this music, moving the audience from that big empty space to the floor of a shady, cozy room.
"Tniz Ren Rey" gives us that room again - we can hear in the single mic recording the occasional creak of the wood floor, the clicks and adjustments of a live performance. I love how the tape loops mix with the instrumentals and songs - sometimes an enigmatic moment or some levity, sometimes a small thing made big and poignant by emphasis. "Joke Factor" is pure slowcore, like what Mimi Parker would sound like off in a corner somewhere, working through and translating a mood as a moment in sound. "You Can’t Make Everyone Happy" taps into the stoic, spirited Basho / Fahey tradition, while other instrumentals like "Integration" find her guitar in a glassine, liquid mode. Thanks, Tniz.
