"Infinite Sports is the latest in a series of nostalgic, introspective releases from Ki Oni, AKA Los Angeles-based ambient artist Chuck Soo-Hoo. Like Soo-Hoo's other recent outings, it evokes a tranquil place deep in the subconscious.
Here, specifically, a Virginia living room circa 1996, boxy TV tuned to NBA basketball, and a bright vision of ten long-limbed figures shuffling across a hard maple court. Soo-Hoo was inspired by the particular memory of watching the classic juggernaut Chicago Bulls with his grandfather, who spoke only Cantonese but bonded wordlessly with his grandson over Jordan fadeaways and Steve Kerr three pointers. They shared something deeper than words, like warm vibrations in the air. Infinite Sports' blissful, kaleidescopic synthesizer tones reconstruct those vibes in a simulated sense memory.
Soo-Hoo created these two sides during the 2020 NBA Finals, broadcasted live from the bubble. He splits his time between working at dublab, L.A.'s freeform radio station, and co-hosting Contact Wave, the station's ambient and experimental music program. He has previously released music on Sound as Language, Inner Islands, Atlantic Rhythms, Doom Trip, Geographic North, Never Content, and Pyramid Blood."
